MAULANA MAHMOOD MADANI
A family which is illustrious and has been at the forefront of the Indian Freedom Struggle, welcomed yet another member to its fold when Maulana Mahmood Madani was birthed in 1964. Little did they know then that this newest entrant to their family, would in the decades following become a leading Islamic scholar and politician in India
Having been elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2006, and with him having served in several committees, notable among which are Agriculture, Social Justice and Empowerment and the Consultative committee for the Ministry of Home Affairs, Maulana Madani has seen firsthand what development can do for the minority class in India.
He has led efforts to provide disaster-relief after several catastrophes in Gujarat and Kashmir after the earthquakes, in tsunami-affected areas of the sub continent, and after floods that ravaged Assam and Bihar.
Maulana Madani is at the forefront of education among the Muslim community and is a known advocate of women’s education, knowing fully well what education can do to help change the fortunes of the entire country.
Maulana Madani is as secular as he is religious. Being among the few to stand up and speak out against terrorism in all its forms, Maulana Madani has in his life become a proponent of peace. Anyone who can see the light is no longer in darkness. While terrorism does not have any religion, all it has is the blood of innocents fuelling it. Issuing a fatwa against people perpetrating terrorism in the name of Islam and saying that it is not a religious act, has further propelled this scholar as someone who is not afraid to speak out for what is right.
