KULDIP NAYAR

Born on 14th August 1923 he completed his BA (Hons.)from Forman Christian College Lahore and LLB from the Law College Lahore.Kuldip Nayar is both a human rights and peace activist. The exemplary diplomat and peace maker in his sunset years was a member of India’s delegation to the United Nations in 1996.In 1990 he was appointed High Commissioner to Great Britain and then later nominated to the upper house of Indian Parliament, Rajya Sabha in August 1997.
The evergreen octogenarian who still possesses a lot of energies has since 2000, been leading peace activists to light candles on the Independence days of Pakistan and India (14/15 August) at the Attari-Wagah India-Pakistan border near Amritsar.
His efforts and initiative has resulted in over 200000 people gathering every year on August 14th at Wagha Border on both sides on Independence Day of Pak-India to light the candles of peace.
Kuldip Nyar has also been working to free Indian prisoners in Pakistan and Pakistani prisoners in India, who have completed their sentences, but have not been set free.Kuldip Naya’s altruistic and benevolent act in an atmosphere of hostility and suspicion is a positive boost for relations between India and Pakistan,2 neighbours in South Asia whose ties have been testy through more than 6 decades.
His tireless efforts adds a new dimension that international relations can be facilitated outside the confines of the diplomatic missions by running the extra mile to advocate for sports particularly cricket which is loved by citizens of both countries to normalize relations.
Here is a man who in the pursuit of peace never runs out of creative ideas to foster peace between the hostile neighbours-he is currently looking forward to project common heroes and freedom fighters of both countries to educate the new generation.
The greatest legacy this exemplary diplomat and peacemaker is bequeathing to the next generation is that the time has come for communities to act as global communicators to reach out to each other in a borderless world.
